This came out in court today when Gomwe and his six accomplices were denied bail by Harare magistrate, Mr Vakayi Chikwekwe who rolled the matter over to tomorrow. The accused will spend another night behind bars.
In opposing bail, the prosecutor, Mr Michael Reza, told the court that Gomwe was suicidal hence the need to protect him by keeping him behind bars. He said Gomwe attempted to shoot himself before he was disarmed by an army officer in Makuti.
After being disarmed, it is alleged, he was later found with rat poison. The pistol and rat poison are being held as exhibits by the police.
Gomwe and six other party officials are facing charges of extorting more than $46 000 from eight housing co-operatives in Glen Norah on several occasions, using the First Lady’s name. NEWS
